Your bedroom is up there with one of the most important rooms in the home; a place where we catch our zzz's, look after our well-being, retreat, relax, and reset.
As the winter months approach, it poses the perfect opportunity to transform your bedroom into an extra cosy haven (*searches 'cosy winter bedroom inspo' on Pinterest*). If you're looking for a nudge in the right direction, we are here to help with some easy yet effective ways to transform your bedroom for the winter season.
Cotton sheets and covers are a must-have in the winter: whether it's flannel, jersey, or a premium cashmere option. Cotton provides the best of both worlds - it's insulating but also breathable, meaning less chance of overheating. It's also worth opting for a higher thread count in winter to ensure the warm air stays locked in, keeping you snug as a bug throughout those cold night's.
If you're planning on purchasing a new duvet set, why not switch up your colour palette for a more wintery bedroom aesthetic. Emerald green, deep blue or a safer charcoal grey are all gorgeous tones to incorporte into your room around this time of year for a warm and cosy feel.
While we want our bedroom to feel warm when it's cold outside, it's important that we don't overheat the room as this has a direct impact on sleep quality. Instead, add extra layers of blankets and throws that can be added/removed when you sleep.
Experts recommend a room temperature of between 16-18°C, with your under-duvet temperature being similar to that of your body (29°C). Naturally, you lose heat during the night through your head and face, thus a cooler bedroom facilitates this heat loss to promote undisturbed sleep. Alternatively, if your bedroom is too cool, your body finds it difficult to maintain the optimal temperature, inturn distrupting your sleep.
Scents play a huge part in creating a calming environment for relaxation and can be a wonderful mood booster. Choose from scents such as cinnamon, oud or orange for that real wintery feel.
We are also a huge fan of reed diffusers for a more consistent wintery scent when your candles aren't burning.
Changing up the decor in your bedroom can be a great way to make your room feel winter-ready. We've mentioned switching out your duvet set, but how about also adding a chunky knitted throw and wintery scatter cushions to your bed. We also suggest investing in a soft rug if you have wooden floors to make your room feel warmer and more inviting.
Introducing soft lighting through lamps and lanterns also helps to create a warm ambience. Opt for a deep, dark coloured lamp shade combined with light bulbs that don't give off harsh, artificial light.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, our desire to sleep grows more in the wintertime. The normal range is between 1.75 and 2.5 hours of extra sleep per night, mostly due to the shorter days and generally poorer weather. With this being said, winter is a great time to consider upgrading your mattress if yours is tired and worn out. As a general rule of thumb, you should look to replace your mattress every 8 to 10 years, however, if you find your current mattress isn't providing adequate levels of support and comfort, it's time for an upgrade.
Duvalay's mattress collections have been developed by experts, with a range of different features to suit all kinds of sleepers. From our Easysleep range to our HD Collection mattresses, each one is guaranteed to elevate your sleep game this winter.
...and if a new mattress isn't quite on the cards, a Duvalay mattress topper is a fantastic way to improve the feel and support of your current mattress to make those extra hours of sleep even more dreamy.
