Whether you're a seasoned traveller or a newbie to the leisure vehicle lifestyle, proper preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. In this guide, we'll walk you through the essential steps to get your van ready for the road ahead.
Start by giving your van a thorough exterior inspection. Check for any signs of damage, including cracks, dents, or leaks. Pay special attention to the roof, windows, doors, and seams.
Inspect the tyres for wear and tear, and ensure they are properly inflated to the recommended pressure.
Clean the exterior thoroughly, removing any dirt, grime, or leftover winter debris- if left this can start to discolour or damage paintwork.

Before starting ensure you have enough space to walk around your vehicle and you’ve gathered all the equipment/products you need to clean. Ideally it is best to start from the top and work your way down. The roof is where most of the leaves, algae and mould gather so pay particular attention to this area. A long-handed brush or mop will help you get to those difficult to reach areas (take care not to overreach and risk falling).
Hose down the entire vehicle to remove any loose dirt, leaves and moss – avoid using a pressure washer as they can be powerful enough to damage paintwork and window seals. Using cleaning products recommended by your manufacturer work your way around your vehicle with a sponge or brush – do not allow the cleaning product to dry. Open windows and skylights to reach those hidden areas! Work in sections cleaning and washing off with clean water until the whole vehicle has been covered.
Clean windows with a sponge gently clean the windows to remove any dirt, you can use a general household window cleaner afterwards to achieve a shine finish.
Don’t forget your wheels, a wheel brush can be a handy solution for removing stubborn dirt from between the spokes.
Finally, apply some wax to form a protective barrier on your vehicle to keep the dirt and water out and give your van a freshly- cleaned shine.
Check the brakes, lights, and indicators to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs or fuses that are burnt out. Test the battery and charging system to make sure everything is functioning correctly. Consider charging or replacing the battery if needed. Check the gas and water systems for leaks or damage. Test the appliances to ensure they are working properly, including the oven, fridge, and water heater.
Give the interior of your caravan a thorough cleaning. Remove any clutter, dust, or debris that may have accumulated over the winter months. Check for signs of damp, mould or mildew and address any issues promptly. Consider using moisture-absorbing products to prevent future mould growth. Inspect the upholstery, curtains, and bedding for any signs of wear or damage. Consider giving them a fresh wash or replacing them if necessary.
Make a checklist of essential items you'll need including kitchen supplies, bedding, toiletries, and emergency equipment. Stock up on food, drinks, and snacks for your journey. Don't forget to pack entertainment essentials such as books, games, and music to keep you entertained during downtime.
Research potential destinations, activities, campsite facilities and availability. Plan your route accordingly, remember to consider the weather forecast, travel time and any upcoming road closures.Make reservations for campsites in advance to ensure availability, especially during peak travel times.
